For a long time, the majority of climate scientists have said and agreed that climate change is a result of human activities on earth. They are more worried than never before as global warming is an increasing threat to society. Recent studies have clear evidence that global warming is causing massive problems in the world.
Growing problem
Before the industrial revolution began, the amount of greenhouse gases in the air had been at a low level for over 650 000 years. After the industrial revolution had made its advance, CO2 levels started an exponential growth. Climate scientists have today concluded that the dramatic rise of CO2 is all man-made. Our planet is swarming with nuclear power plants, roads full of cars and residential buildings. All of these things are sources to massive CO2 emissions which is leading to a strong rise in the global average temperature.
Global warming
The problem with the greenhouse gases is that they will affect the greenhouse effect. The sun sends solar radiation towards Earth. Some radiation gets reflected back into space, while the rest goes through the atmosphere and hits Earth's surface. The sun energy will be absorbed which will cause the surface to get warmed. Heat will then be radiated back out to space. While some exits Earth, the greenhouse gases absorbs a great amount of heat and sends it back to Earth again. This procedure is known as the greenhouse effect. If the amount of greenhouse gases rises, more heat will be absorbed and sent back to earth – which is known as global warming.
Terrifying consequences
James Hansen, a NASA scientist with fields in climatology, says that global warming can lead to serious threats against our planet. – Greenhouse gases, especially CO2, have become a major problem for our planet. If we don't do something, the average temperature will continue to rise. That would result in melting of land ice, and that's where things are turning bad. Because of the land ice melting, the sea level would rise. What would then happen to Netherlands, Solomon Islands and other low-lying countries with a lot of coastlines? They will of course be flooded.
Hansen is sure that global warming could end up in an evil circle.
- After the sea level has rose, there will be more water surface. More water surface to absorb solar radiation, which would again lead to a warmer climate. H2O is also a greenhouse gas, so it doesn't make it any better if the water evaporates.
Drastic changes is needed
Many people are aware of the climate changes, yet changes doesn't come by itself. It's important for the future that people think about their use of fossil fuels, and try to cut down a bit. Simply turning off lights, lowering thermostat temperature, buying second-hand clothes and giving away used stuff can help our environment a lot. Residential buildings are actually the second biggest source to greenhouse gas emissions with a share of 11 %. People need to act fast, and try to cut down the usage of electricity and hot water. If we continue to expand the amount of emission in the air, it may soon be too late to do something about it.
Politicians is our hope
While the people have to work together to make the environment cleaner. The politicians have to set new rules that will make us limit the emissions of greenhouse gases. Not everyone thinks about their use of fossil fuels, and many does not even bat an eye. If the politicians makes laws forcing everybody to somehow limit emissions, it would help the environment a lot. For example, the Norwegian parliament has decided to forbid all use of oil heating after 2020. All Norwegians have to get a heat pump within that year. The only problem is that many countries don't want to spend money on saving the environment. They make good money off power plants and cutting down trees.
Fate lies in society’s hands
Many smart solutions have been developed today. We have the electrical car, a smart invention that has already saved the environment for a lot of CO2. Still, we can't avoid global warming without the people doing something. The politicians aren't the ones making the problems – the people is. Besides, the lawmakers don't want to lose money, which they will if they for example shuts down power plants. The world's population are the ones that will decide earth's future. The electrical car does not make any difference if the public does not want to use it. If we want to lower the global temperature before it is too late, operation is necessary. Save energy, demonstrate against the government and push the politicians. Maybe it is not too late if we are quick enough.
