The monumentality of Savitsky's pictures are related to the Severe style of Soviet painting in the 1960s. In this period artists tried to show Soviet people’s life more truthfully. Pictures were simple and laconic. They became similar to the poster. Artists often represented people of the most difficult professions.
Savitsky was born on February 18, 1922 in the village Zvenyachi. He was a prisoner in the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau. Also he fought on the Sevastopol's front. After that he studied at the Surikov Institute in Moscow
Mikhail Savitsky is best known as the author of paintings devoted to the military theme. First of all he tried to show the horrors of war. Many criticized him for excessive truth.
And now, please, look at the picture "Vitebskie vorota". It is based on real events.
Vitebsk gate are the 40-kilometer gap on a front line between Velizh and Usvyaty. During their existence about 200 thousand women, old men and children were evacuated, products were transported for army.
Pay attention to soldiers going over hills. We can’t see them distinctly. The crowd of people symbolizes movement to life. The red glow is a symbol of war. Also you can see woman here. But they have nothing feminine in their faces. There is only expression of courage and determination.
In his pictures a special role is played by the image of woman as mother as an embodiment of the Motherland, for example The Partisan Madonna. It was created in 1967.
Savitsky refused to sell his works to private collectioners, especially to foreigners. This work was bought by the Tretyakov gallery and the director of the Belarusian state museum Elena Aladova asked Savitsky to repeat it. But Savitsky created another masterpiece for this museum. Partisanskaya Madonna Minskaya was painted in 1978.
On this painting you can see a beautiful woman with her baby, reminding the Mother of God with Christ. The storm sky symbolizes threat of death, threat of misery and pain. In this work Savitsky addresses to classical canons. The picture has something in common with well-known masterpiece "Sistine Madonna" by Raphael.
On this picture the life cycle is shown. There is an old woman, barefoot peasant with a rifle, guerrillas. On the background, we can see people working in the field. Life goes on. And the baby is symbol of eternal life.
The marshal Zhukov noticed: "The person who has endured difficulties, all life will take power in this victory. Savitsky managed to keep humanity and cheerfulness. He survived – and showed us that should never happen again.
